Toddler Blanket: A Sewing Tutorial

Toddler Blanket: A Sewing Tutorial
I'm not sure but this might be my first sewing tutorial!  It makes sense since I haven't been sewing for that long.
Anyway, my baby is official a toddler.  He moved out of the nursery at daycare and into the toddler room.  So, he needed a blanket to make the transition with him.

I decided to make him one.  I had attempted a blanket for my sister-in-laws baby shower and hated how it turned out.  I almost didn't give it to her and I think once the baby comes I will make another one (any day now!).

A friend of mine had posted pictures of a rag quilt on Facebook and I really liked it but didn't want to do all that work.

I also wanted to make Dashiell his very own blanket that isn't too small.  Doesn't it seem that baby blankets don't last very long?  We also have few boy blankets in the house.  Annabelle has thing for blankets and they all seem to be on her bed. Of course, she wants me to make her a new blanket now too.

Okay, I'll get on with it already!

What you'll need:
2 yards of coordinating flannel fabric (one yard of each)
sewing machine
washing machine and dryer

That's it! Two yards of fabric will make a fairly nice size blanket for a toddler.

To start put your two pieces of fabric together with wrong sides facing. Line up your fabric and cut so all four sides are even and touching.  Pin all the way around.

Then sew a straight stitch about a half inch all the way around on each of the four sides.

That's it! You are done sewing!

This is the fun and time-consuming part.  Snip all the way around the blanket so you have strips that are about an eighth of an inch.

Now, throw your blanket into the washer and dryer.  This will make the fringe start to fray.

I love the way it looks! Dashiell does too! A peeked in on him the other day at night time and saw him cuddled under his blanket.  He was peaceful and happy!
